Edinburgh, Scotland, August 28, 2023 – The University of Edinburgh and the Coalition on Media and Education for Development Africa Forum (CAFOR) convened a landmark consultative meeting on August 28, 2023, at the University of Edinburgh’s esteemed campus. The conference, attended by key representatives from both institutions, heralded the beginning of a promising partnership to advance education, research, and societal impact.
Dr. Deborah Kayembe, the first African female Rector of this University, orchestrated the meeting. The attendees included Prof. Sir Peter Mathieson, the Principal of the University of Edinburgh, Prof. James Smith, the Vice-Chancellor in charge of International Affairs, and Dr. Lawalley Cole, the Executive Director of CAFOR, along with various other officials from CAFOR.
The meeting centered on a wide array of collaboration themes reflecting the shared vision of both institutions. The discussion delved into the following issues:
- Digital Programmes: Both parties expressed a strong interest in leveraging technology to create innovative digital programs, focusing on enhancing educational experiences and expanding accessibility.
- Medical Programs: Discussions revolved around potential joint initiatives in the medical field, particularly the development of doctor and nursing programs tailored to meet evolving healthcare needs.
- Digital Humanity Programs: The meeting explored interdisciplinary programs at the intersection of technology and humanities to address contemporary societal challenges.
- Archiving and Digital Preservation: Both institutions recognized the importance of archiving and digital preservation, leading to considerations of collaborative projects in this domain.
- TVET Programs: A mutual desire to collaborate on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs aimed at upskilling and supporting economic development was expressed.
- Global Impact: The meeting emphasized the shared aspiration to make a positive global impact through collaborative projects and initiatives.
- AI for Social Good: There was unanimous agreement on ways to harness AI for social good, aligning with both institutions’ commitment to ethical and responsible AI development.
- AI and Digital Hubs: Discussions included the potential establishment of AI and digital hubs to foster innovation, research, and knowledge sharing.
- University of Edinburgh Branches in Africa: Both parties explored the possibility of establishing University of Edinburgh branches in Africa, aiming to increase accessibility to world-class education.
- Open-Source Digital Property: The concept of open-source digital property was explored to drive innovation and knowledge dissemination.
- Connectivity and Learning: The role of technology in overcoming geographical barriers, enhancing connectivity, and optimizing learning experiences was also a focus area.
- TIBIA Involvement: The discussion touched upon the potential involvement of TIBIA (Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform) in collaborative projects.
- Innovation Partnerships: The meeting concluded with an emphasis on forging innovation partnerships that leverage each institution’s strengths for mutual benefit.
