It is with deep sorrow that the Coalition on Media and Education for Development Africa Forum (CAFOR) announce the passing of Mr. Bright Kampaundi, a cherished founding member of CAFOR and the Executive Director of Youth and Children Rights Shield (YOCRIS) in Malawi. Mr. Kampaundi, who was born on 9 July, 1976, died on 21 February 2025.
As a member of the Executive Board of CAFOR, Mr. Kampaundi’s unwavering dedication to youth empowerment and social justice has profoundly impacted communities throughout Malawi and across the African continent.
At the helm of YOCRIS, Mr. Kampaundi championed initiatives aimed at transforming unjust structures and systems, striving to cultivate a Malawian society grounded in justice and peace. His steadfast commitment to constitutional principles and international legal standards was evident in the organization’s mission to drive societal transformation.
Mr. Kampaundi’s collaboration with CAFOR traces back to his involvement with the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA) Working Group on Communication for Education and Development (COMED). Established in 1998, COMED sought to bolster national consensus and public support for education policies and programs across Africa. Through this platform, Mr. Kampaundi worked alongside various stakeholders to enhance policy dialogue and advance educational outcomes continent-wide.
Demonstrating his commitment to civil society engagement, Mr. Kampaundi played a pivotal role in facilitating the registration of CAFOR as a civil society organization in Malawi. His efforts ensured that CAFOR could effectively operate within the country, fostering collaboration among media and educational development stakeholders.
In addition to his organizational leadership, Mr. Kampaundi significantly contributed to the development of a comprehensive training toolkit designed for journalists specializing in educational issues. This innovative resource, produced in collaboration with COMED, serves as a vital tool for journalists, communication officers in ministries of education, and education campaign activists, enhancing their capacity to report on and advocate for educational development across Africa.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Kampaundi was celebrated for his unwavering dedication, collaborative spirit, and significant contributions to youth and community development. His efforts have positively influenced countless lives, and his enduring legacy will continue to inspire those committed to justice and social change.
He also fought against rights abuse and social- economic injustices through Forum For National Development (FND), a human rights grouping for which he was Board Chairperson.
Towards the end of his career, Mr Kampaundi dedicated his life towards the mission of evangelization.
Mr. Kampaundi passed away following a sudden illness in Lilongwe, Malawi. His burial will take place on Monday, 24 February, 2025 in Lilongwe.
