Mrs Amie Joof-Cole

Amie Joof is a journalist-activist and is the Executive Director of FAMEDEV- the Inter-African Network for Women, Media, Gender and Development. She is a Senior SYNERGOS Fellow. She has more than 35 years of work experience in the media, communication, women, gender and children’s rights issues, press freedom and freedom of expression, research, advocacy, and training at national, sub-regional, regional and international levels. She has worked in several media and development organizations and has occupied both managerial and governance positions in different media and development organizations, both public and Non-Governmental. Amie Joof was President of GAMCOTRAP, a non-governmental organization dealing with harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and gender and human rights issues. She was the first woman to become President of the Gambia Family Planning Association and served as chairperson of the National Women’s Council of The Gambia from 1993 to 1999. She also served on the Executive Board of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, IPPF Africa Region. She chaired the Editorial Committee of the Africa Link Newsletter of the IPPF Africa Region. She also served as Chairperson of the Communication Working Group of the Roll Back Malaria Programme of the WHO.
