Mme Jahou Samba Faal – Recipient of an Honorary Doctorate

At its 11th Graduation Ceremony slated for the 21st of December 2022, the Technical University of Kenya would confer upon Mme Jahou Samba Faal, the degree of Doctor of Technology (honoris causa).
Madam Jahou Samba Faal is the Secretary-General of the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA), formerly the Commonwealth Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA). Previously she served as the Director General of Gambia Technical Training Institute (GTTI) in Banjul. GTTI was, for a long time, the premier institution for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in The Gambia. During her tenure as the Director General of GTTI, she initiated upgrading the Institute to a University of Applied Science, Engineering, and Technology.
Madam Faal is a champion of TVET and has played a significant role in its promotion in Africa. She joined ATUPA with vast experience in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). As an active member of the Commonwealth Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (CAPA) Board, Mme Faal has made outstanding contributions in CAPA activities. In this regard, she earned the appointment as the first woman Secretary General of CAPA. She has since spearheaded the successful transformation of the CAPA to the Association of Technical University and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA). She is now leading ATUPA in working with the African Union toward the realization of Agenda 2063.
Madam Faal appreciates the role of women in TVET. She has entrenched women in Technical Education and Development to empower women in Africa to take leadership positions and play strategic roles in TVET. She reactivated the Women in Technical Education and Development (WITED) initiative at the institutional and national levels in all ATUPA member countries and institutions.
Madam Faal has served as a member of the National Examination Committee for the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC). The Committee advises on developing Examinations, Aptitude Tests, and Research in The Gambia member countries. She has also served as a Board Member at the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority, responsible for all tertiary and higher educational institutions in The Gambia.
Madam Faal was born in The Gambia, where she did her primary, secondary and tertiary education. She holds undergraduate and post–graduate degrees in education from the University of The Gambia, and University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom, respectively.
She is married to Honourable Samba Faal and blessed with children. Madam Faal has traveled widely and attended numerous conferences as a participant and resource person.
